Hey, I’m Matt!

How did I get here?
In the summer of 2019, after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Informatics, I relocated from my lifelong home in the Chicago suburbs to Santa Monica, California, where I began my first professional job in the tech industry. Driving through the Mountain West from Illinois to California with my dad and brother was when I first felt drawn to the mountains. We made stops in Badlands, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton National Parks. Other than a trip to the Grand Canyon as a child, I’d never seen such inspiring natural beauty. I settled into my new home with ease. Trails were close by, there were beautiful flowers on my walk to work, and I lived 1 mile from the ocean. Moving far away from home had also helped me to start exploring who I was as a person. Time passed, and shortly after local COVID-19 lockdowns began, I took a risk by purchasing my first DSLR camera for $600. A used Canon T7i with a kit lens from someone on eBay. By that time, my iPhone camera wasn’t enough. I couldn't portray the beauty of the California mountains in the way that I wanted. I needed a tool that would enable me to fully express my vision. Ultimately, that purchase was what kicked off my journey as a photographer and, more recently, a videographer. Little did I know, my newfound hobby would grow into a passion for telling stories from adventures in the mountains around the world. Fast forward 4 years, and I’ve left behind my career in tech to pursue something that fulfills me in a way that nothing else can.
Timeline
2019
I started hiking A LOT after I moved to Santa Monica. As near as the hills of Los Leones and as far as the San Bernardino mountain range 2 hours east of LA. On my hikes, I stopped regularly to take photos with my cellphone because I enjoyed capturing beauty of the places I discovered. Without much thought, hiking and taking photos was quickly becoming a passion of mine.
2020
Lockdowns in California began and shortly after, with some encouragement from my roommate at the time, I decided to buy a beginner DSLR camera. Every day after work I watched YouTube videos, read blogs, and scoured the internet for tips on how to shoot and edit good photos. Day after day, I would practice in my bedroom, outside my apartment, and on my hikes. I loved the process of learning new techniques and applying them while out in the field - each photo improving one after the other. In November 2020, I decided to move to Salt Lake City to be closer to the mountains.
2021 - 2024
By June 2021, I was seriously starting to consider what it would take to be a professional outdoor/landscape photographer. Erin Outdoors was one of my biggest inspirations at the time (and still is). I remember her saying that to be in the field, you have to learn to be comfortable traveling alone on assignments. In September 2021, I embarked on what would be one of the most empowering journeys of my life. I spent 2 months living in my car and traveling 4k+ miles around the Mountain West, capturing beautiful mountains, deserts, and coastlines. It gave me confidence in knowing that I COULD travel alone on assignments and be happy while doing it. In the summer of 2022, I explored Perú and Canada for 2 months each, pursuing similar objectives but on an international scale. After being laid off from my tech job in November ‘22, I decided to pursue photo and video full-time. Fast forward to the present, and split half my time based in Salt Lake City, and half based in Huaraz, Peru.
